What makes a school more than just a place to learn?

When AISB unveiled its new mission statement last year, it introduced more than a collection of inspiring words. Created by students from grades 1–12 through the Yellow Car initiative, the statement set out a vision for the school community. But how do these values appear in everyday life at AISB? From leadership opportunities and internships to student-led initiatives and community events, members of the AISB community share how the mission statement comes to life both inside and outside the classroom. A fragment of the mission statement can be seen below:
Think fearlessly. Act with kindness. Shape tomorrow.
We are empowered not just to absorb the knowledge we receive but to challenge it, shape it, and expand it.
Here, our learning is driven by curiosity, not compliance.
It is here that we learn to lead when we need to and follow when it’s right.
We aren’t just preparing for the future, we are creating it.

A community responds

Ever since its release to the AISB community, students, parents, and teachers have poured in their opinions on the new mission statement, revealing a mix of perspectives. 

“I love the new mission statement.” Stated Justin Clouden, a business teacher in the Diploma Program (DP) and Global Impact Diploma (GID) coordinator, “I feel like it accurately and faithfully reflects the community at AISB that I’ve grown to love and care for. I’m always impressed by who our young people are, their ability to grow and develop, and their desire to positively impact our community and the world around us. It reminds us that it’s less about the world today, and more about the world our young people will shape tomorrow.”
Learning beyond the classroom

This perspective closely aligns with the goals of the Global Impact Diploma, a project-based, interdisciplinary program launched during the 2025-26 school year at various international schools worldwide, including AISB. The course emphasizes leadership and impact, and aims for students to transform themselves, inspire others, and impact their local communities through self-reflection and leadership skills. One valuable aspect of the course is the internship for impact, where students spend a semester doing an internship of their choice to expand their skills and serve their local community. As someone currently enrolled in this course, I am doing a marketing and communications internship with the AISB department, and I can confidently say that this opportunity has improved my skills and given me more insight into this field.

The program encourages students not just to learn, but to take action, which directly reflects the mission statement’s focus on shaping the future rather than passively preparing for it. Its hands-on approach showcases the mission’s emphasis on curiosity-driven learning and preparing for life beyond the classroom. Through my internship experience, I brought the mission statement to life in a tangible way by seeing how my learning is applicable beyond the classroom.

Voices from the wider community

Members of the wider AISB community also recognize this student-centered approach. Parent Melani Vargas greatly appreciates the new school mission, stating, “The mission statement is really inspiring and feels very student-focused. It highlights curiosity, growth, and kindness in a way that’s easy to connect with. It clearly shows a strong and positive school identity.”

Opportunities to lead and create impact

This perspective is evident in the supportive school community and in the various opportunities available to students, such as student councils, leadership roles through co-curricular activities or coaching sports, and school-wide initiatives. These give students a platform to express their ideas and contribute to their school community. From art to tech to sports, students can engage in a variety of activities and explore their interests.

In addition, they have the opportunity to lead in these areas, such as the art council, where students assist with planning talent shows and visiting artists, and the sports council, where students assist with planning tournaments. The CAS (creativity, activity, and service) program, an integral aspect of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, allows students to explore their interests through service trips and school clubs. Students can even propose an event they want to host to the administration, which is very supportive of making the event happen, such as the monthly “Food Around The World” days, where the cafeteria showcases cuisine from a different country each month.

Shaping the community

Overall, these opportunities empower students not just to participate in their environment but to shape it, giving them a platform to express their ideas and actively contribute to their community, bringing to life the idea that every perspective is valued and preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
