Wellbeing

Our team works from a strengths-based approach. They start with what your child can do and build from there. When a child’s behavior changes, the first question we ask is ‘what do they need‘?

Wellbeing initiatives are built into each day

  • Counselors in every section, ELC through Grade 12
  • Developmental counseling program across all three tiers
  • SEL curriculum from EC2 through Grade 12, built into the regular timetable
  • Circle of Security in the ELC, relationship-based approach to settling in
  • Advisory system in Secondary, one dedicated mentor for every student
  • Wellbeing screeners used school-wide to track how students are feeling
  • Belonging Team: staff, students, and parents meeting to reflect on community health
  • Transitional support for families joining and leaving

I moved here from a school in the UK and was nervous about fitting in. Within two weeks I had a group of friends and a teacher who already knew my name.

Levels of support

AISB counselors deliver a comprehensive developmental counseling program, working in partnership with students, families, teachers, and staff. The program runs across the same three-tier system used in Learning Support, so the whole school is working from the same framework.

Targeted small-group workshops support students working through specific challenges, like transitions, anxiety, friendship difficulties, study skills, self-regulation.

Individual and family counseling, crisis support, and referrals to outside providers when needed. This tier also includes coordination with the learning support team and external professionals around the same student when required.

Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning runs from EC2 through Grade 12 using a documented curriculum across all sections, built into the school day.

Wellbeing screeners help staff track how students are feeling and make informed decisions about support. Students have regular wellbeing check-ins and staff complete an annual wellbeing survey. A Belonging Team, made up of staff, students, and parents, meet to reflect on how well the community is living up to its own commitments.

If your child is in the Diploma Programme or taking College Board assessments, the Learning Support team arranges access accommodations for their external exams. They make sure your child gets what they need when it matters most.

Wellbeing in ELC

In the ELC, the Pastoral Lead is your child’s first wellbeing contact. Every teacher in the ELC is trained in the Circle of Security Programme, a relationship-based approach that helps adults build secure, trusting connections with young children. The course is also offered to parents in English and Romanian.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing in Elementary

In Elementary, your child’s homeroom teacher is their anchor. They track how your child is settling, keep you informed, and connect them to the counselor or pastoral team when something needs more attention. The social-emotional learning curriculum runs from EC2, giving children structured time to build the emotional vocabulary and skills they will use across the school years.

Wellbeing in Secondary

In Secondary, every student has an Advisory mentor: a dedicated adult who meets with them throughout the year and knows them well. Advisory is the first line of pastoral care: the relationship is consistent, personal, and not primarily about grades.

The counseling team works alongside Advisory and steps in when something needs deeper support. Students can come to their counselor directly, or be referred by a teacher, parent, or Advisory mentor. The team also runs group programs and peer support, and helps students through the specific pressures of the MYP and Diploma years.
