Elementary School
For children ages 6 to 11 in Grade 1 to Grade 5.
Your child helps shape their own units of inquiry by choosing questions, directing investigations, and presenting what they find. In Elementary, they grow into someone who can lead a project, build friendships, and speak up when something matters to them.
Learning in Elementary
Every day starts with Morning Meeting. Students gather on the mat, share news, and set a focus for the day.
From there, the day is structured around the IB Primary Years Programme. The rest of the day follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We teach through inquiry: your child investigates topics, asks questions about what they learn, and then connects it to something real in their life.
The teachers make it very easy to understand and it’s very simple to learn. I’ve learned how to work as a team better and to collaborate with other people.
Something new every day
On any given day, Elementary students are trying something new. One week it might be mapping their family’s migration story. The next, running a math investigation on the playground. Or even building prototypes in the Makerspace.
Specialist classes in art, music, and PE run alongside the core program. Languages are part of weekly life: Spanish or French, Romanian, and English as an Additional Language for those who need it.
Building emotional intelligence
Social-emotional learning happens every day. The Brave Awards celebrate students who show courage , like trying something new, standing up for a classmate, or persevering with a problem they wanted to quit.

Grades 1 through 5, for students aged 6 to 11. Your child needs to have turned the relevant age by September 1st.
The PYP is an international curriculum framework that centers learning on inquiry, concepts, and student agency. At AISB, it runs from the ELC through Grade 5. Your child builds the skills to investigate, question, and make connections across subjects.
English is the language of instruction. Students also take Spanish or French as an additional language, and Romanian is part of the curriculum. Teachers use your child’s home language as a bridge, so students can draw on their full linguistic repertoire, and a parent-paid Home Language Program supports development of first languages. EAL support is available for students who need it.
Students in Grades 1 to 4 use school-issued iPads. In Grade 5, students bring their own MacBooks as part of AISB’s BYOMac program, which continues through Grade 12. Technology is a tool for learning, not a subject on its own.
Our learning support and EAL teams work alongside your child’s classroom teacher. If your child needs additional support, it happens inside the learning, not separate from it. The team works closely with families to identify needs early and respond practically.
A student-led independent research project in Grade 5. Your child chooses a real-world issue, investigates it deeply, and presents their findings to the school community. It is the capstone of the Elementary years, a genuine rite of passage.
