A robust foundation

A robust foundation

Welcome to our school

In Elementary, our goal is for all children to thrive and experience joy in their learning.

When walking the halls and visiting the classrooms of our Elementary School you will quickly be embraced by the welcoming atmosphere, one where students and teachers are actively engaged in inquiry-based learning, and where the IB Learner Profile is visible at every grade level.

Elementary School Students enjoy a beautiful outdoor campus and participate in a diverse range of curricular and co-curricular activities to nurture their interests and passions.

As a faculty, we work to create learning opportunities which are authentic, challenging, and enjoyable.

What We Believe

In Elementary, we strive to create an environment where students are excited to come to school and feel as if they are learning and growing each day.

We believe that voice, choice and ownership are key to student learning, as we ensure that students are actively involved in their learning.

We think of each moment at school, whether in classrooms, the cafeteria, library, playground or anywhere in between, as a learning experience.

A Whole Child Approach

Educating the whole child is central to the IB Primary Years Program. As a Primary Years Programme School (PYP), we are a community of learners and believe in engaging our students in meaningful learning through pedagogy which includes inquiry, collaboration and direct instruction.

Providing learners with timely feedback, assessing for learning, and supporting a reflective process means our students have rich opportunities to develop deep conceptual understandings.

When students understand and make connections to concepts they are able to transfer their learning to new areas.

As a PYP school, we focus on the elements of: Knowledge, Skills, Concepts, and Action and work to embody the IB Learner Profile all of our interactions with one another.

Building Classroom Communities

Elementary students spend the majority of their day with a homeroom teacher who facilitates learning through  Literacy, Mathematics, and the Programme of Inquiry (which also comprises of Science and Social Studies in addition to Literacy and Mathematics). Teachers collaborate to create interactive, relevant and thought-provoking units which allow room for student exploration and voice, as well as ensuring that important skills, concepts and knowledge are explored and understood.

Students attend various specialist classes (Art, Music, PE)  as part of their learning experiences. They also attend language classes four times per week. These include Additional Languages (Spanish/French), Romanian Mother Tongue, and English as an Additional Language. In addition, where possible, we seek to support other Mother Tongue languages (which is a paid program).

As an inclusive school, students also have access to our Learning Support Team and our EAL Team who focus on helping students to gain access to the curriculum.

Digital Learning

At AISB, we believe every member of the school community shares a responsibility to foster technology literacy in all learners.

Technology integration and frameworks like the ISTE Standards for students are used as lenses to review and enhance the curriculum and our professional practice, providing learning opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise.

As an authentic, balanced and intentional process, skills and concepts related to technology use are interwoven into the fabric of our program of inquiry and taught in context.

In Elementary, students in grades 1 through 4 are issued iPads for learning in school, while grade 5 students bring their own MacBooks to school as part of our
BYOMac Program in grades 5 to 12

Any questions regarding technology in the Elementary level can be addressed to the Digital Learning Coordinator, Gitane Reveilleau, or the PYP Digital Learning Coach, Sarah Hodgson.
