Admissions Policy

Admission to AISB is based on the following considerations:

  • The potential of the applicant to benefit from the educational program.
  • The capability of the school to meet the educational needs of the applicant.
  • The ability of the applicant to meet attendance and behavioral requirements.
  • Fulfillment of the school's financial and medical requirements.
  • The effect of the applicant on the class as a whole.

Children of all nationalities may seek admission to the school. Whenever it is not possible to accommodate all qualified applicants, students enrolled as of the end of the previous school year and who have met all the school's requirements are automatically enrolled for the following year.

Whenever it is not possible to accommodate all qualified applicants, the following admission priorities will apply:

  • Children of U.S. Embassy employees and PAS program beneficiaries
  • Siblings of currently enrolled students
  • Children of other U.S. citizens residing in Romania
  • Children from other English speaking countries and former AISB students
  • Other qualified applicants from any nationality

The proportion of any nationality of students enrolled at AISB should normally be no more than 30% of the entire student population, except for US citizens. The proportion of any nationality of students at any specific grade level should not exceed 35%, except for US citizens.

Students seeking admission to AISB during their senior year must enroll no later than one week after the start of the first semester.

Entrance Age
Children who have attained the age of 3, 4, 5, or 6 on or before September 1 of the school year are eligible for admission to Early Childhood-3, Early Childhood 4, Kindergarten, or Grade 1, respectively. Verification of age, by copy of a passport or birth certificate, is required for all students.

Placement
Initial placement is made in strict accordance with the entrance age requirements and for older students, after consideration of their current grade level. Subsequent promotion or non-promotion is determined solely by the AISB teaching and administrative staff.

At the Elementary School level, all new students will be assessed for three to five weeks during which an assessment team, including parents, will determine if the grade placement is appropriate. The basis for this assessment is developmental readiness, taking into account physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and academic considerations. Children who have attended a school with an IB, American or similar curriculum will be placed in the grade after the last one completed on condition that proper school records are provided.

Placement in the Middle School, Grades 6 - 8, is generally based on school records and teacher or counselor recommendations. Students who have attended a school with an IB, American or similar curriculum will be placed in the grade after the last one successfully completed if proper school records are provided. Diagnostic tests in some subject areas, such as French or Spanish, may be given for placement in appropriate subject levels. All non-native English speaking students applying for admission to grades 6-12 are required to take and pass an English proficiency test before being admitted.

High School students, grades 9-12, must be in a position to successfully complete a college preparatory academic program in order to earn an IB and/or AISB diploma. This is determined by evaluating the following: previous school records, teacher or counselor recommendations, information from parents, and tests administered by AISB in Math and English language proficiency. Diagnostic tests in some subject areas, such as Math, English, French and Spanish may be given for placement in appropriate subject levels. Students should be no more than one year older or younger than the average age for their grade and not older than 19 when they graduate. For entry into the IB Diploma Program in Grade 11, students must demonstrate an appropriately advanced proficiency in writing and mathematics.
